Using/Enforcing
Server Qutoas
|
Why
does Digital Indigo use/enforce server quotas on my account?
Server quotas protect the server from accidental and intentional
abuse. Without quotas, users or Internet processes could get out
of control. In doing so, the server could potentially run out
of space on the hard drives, affecting all users.
The
use of quotas keeps users and processes from abusing disk space,
and keeps a cap on usage. This prevents any single user or process
from claiming the the hard drives as "theirs."
Why
is account space more expensive with Digital Indigo?
Digital Indigo uses a much more sophisticated and reliable setup
than many low-end hosting companies. Along with these more expensive
setups is a higher operational cost.
Most
low-end hosting companies (typically those that offer hundreds
of megabytes for $10-20 a month) use consumer-grade equipment
for their machines. This means they may use generic computer systems,
and standard consumer hard drives.
Digital
Indigo uses commerical-grade Dell rack servers. The hard drive
setup on these machines is a configuration known as Ultra Wide
SCSI with RAID. These is a fancy way of saying that we use super-high-speed,
commercial-grade hard drives. These drives cost up to 10 times
more per megabyte than a consumer grade hard drive.
We
also keep two hard drives with identical data in our servers at
all times. That means one hard drive can completely die, and the
server will still continue to run without losing any information
or going off-line.
However,
this means that for every megabyte of space our customer use,
we have to provide two megabytes of drive space! (One for the
main copy, and one on the mirror RAID drive). All of these costs
add up. And while it provides for an extremely reliable service,
it is not price competetive with consumer grade hosting companies.
