Solaris (Sun UNIX) Administration
Below is a very brief listing of some problems encountered with Solaris on the SPARC architecture.

Recogonzing New Devices

Turn on the machine and press "Stop-A". This will give you a prompt. Type "boot -r" to cause the OS to recogonize new devices and make the appropriate links.

Formatting, and Partitioning Hard Drives

Use the "format" command to do this. Upon running format, you should see a listing of all drives. Select the drive you wish to work on. From there you can choose whether you wish to partition it, format it, verify it, or other options.

If partitioning a drive, keep in mind that the third partition has to be declared as a "Whole Disk" and must start at the first sector and end at the last sector.

After creating a partition, you will need to add a filesystem. In the past the mkfs command was generally used for this. However, it may generate messages such as "size not specified". It is recommended that the newfs command be used instead.

Unable to boot due as a result of failure to deduct icode.

The icode must be loaded in the first DIMM. On some Suns, such as a SPARC 5, this can be difficult as the DIMM slots are not labeled. (Incidentally the slot closest to the SBUS connectors is Slot 1). To resolve this boot problem, move your DIMMs to slot 1.

Sharing via NFS

Starting NFS is relatively easy in Sun Unix. Become super user, and typing the following commands to enable NFS.

su -
cd /usr/lib/nfs
./mountd
./nfsd

Next export the directories you want to share:

share /tmp

Now you can go to another Sun, Linux, or Unix machine, and access the shared directory by mounting it:

mount -F nfs <ip_of_source>:/tmp /mnt/tmp
