How Can I Set The Outgoing E-mail Address To My Login and/or Domain Name?

Most of the time your e-mail program will already show the appropriate username and domain name for your account. However, under certain circumstances you may wish to change this name. The following lists how to do it in PINE (command line), SendMail (MTA), Outlook (POP Client), and SquirrelMail (Web Client).

Setting your outgoing e-mail address with Outlook.
You can set your e-mail address to anything you wish by entering the e-mail address you wish to send as in the E-Mail Address field. This can be access for an existing account by going to Tools then clicking on Accounts, and selecting to Edit your existing account.

Setting your outgoing e-mail address with SquirrelMail.
Log into SquirrelMail and click on the Options link at the top of the web page. Next click on the Personal Information link. On the Personal Information Page, enter you desired e-mail address in the E-mail Address field. Click the Submit button to save your changes.

Setting your outgoing e-mail address with PINE.
From PINE's main menu, press the S button for Setup. Then press C for Configuration. You will see a field called Domain Name. Scroll down to this, press Enter, and type your new domain name, and press Enter. Now you can press E to Exit, and answer Y for yes to Save Changes.

Note: You can also have PINE change your user name and domain name based on who an e-mail was from, or by a selection made when creating a new e-mail. This is done by utilizing Roles, a more advanced feature of PINE not discussed in this document.

Setting your outgoing e-mail address with Sendmail.
Programmers can set their e-mail address using Sendmail directly. This is done using the -r option. For example, to send out an e-mail to joe@smith.com with a sender of frank@rizzo.com, you would type the following:
/usr/sbin/sendmail -r frank@rizzo.com joe@smith.com

Note: You may have to add users using this command to the file /etc/mail/trusted-users to avoid warnings from Sendmail.
